A Short History of Saco, Montana

Nestled on the northern plains of Phillips County, Saco, Montana is a small town with a big heart and deep roots in America’s frontier spirit. Founded in the early 20th century as the Great Northern Railway pushed westward, Saco became a vital stop for settlers, ranchers, and agricultural pioneers seeking opportunity in the wide-open spaces of Big Sky Country.

The town was officially incorporated in 1918 and grew steadily as wheat farming, cattle ranching, and the railroad brought life and commerce to the area. Saco’s close-knit community thrived on hard work, resilience, and mutual support—values that continue to define its character today.

Despite its small population, Saco has remained a symbol of classic rural Americana: one post office, one school, one café—but a thousand stories of perseverance, family, and grit. It’s the kind of place where neighbors still wave from the porch, where generations live on the same land, and where traditions are passed down like heirlooms.

About our Founder

Sally J. Dougherty (Strain)
Founder, SACO Capital | Matriarch of Silent Strength

Sally J. Dougherty, born and raised in the tight-knit town of Saco, Montana, stands as the quiet force behind SACO Capital. Known for her unwavering heart and profound sense of duty to family, Sally built a legacy not through loud declarations or public ambition, but through the enduring strength of selfless love, private courage, and steadfast integrity.

Sally often speaks fondly of her childhood in Saco—a place where the streets were familiar, the neighbors dependable, and the values eternal. It was there, beneath wide Montana skies and within a home of warmth and discipline, that she was shaped by loving parents and a community that modeled honor, humility, and perseverance. These early lessons would become the compass guiding every chapter of her life.

As a mother, Sally placed her family’s needs above all else, leading not with command but with compassion. Her strength rarely announced itself, but it was always there—steady, resilient, and deeply rooted. Through challenges both seen and unseen, she held fast with grace and dignity, never seeking credit, only striving for what was right.

In founding SACO Capital, Sally did more than launch a financial entity—she preserved a legacy. The company name itself pays homage to her hometown, a quiet nod to the values that shaped her and the legacy she now passes on. Every decision made, every venture taken, carries the imprint of a woman who led with her heart and walked with quiet purpose.

Sally J. Dougherty is not only the founder of SACO Capital—she is its soul. Her life reminds us that real strength isn’t always loud, and true leadership often begins at home.
